Neither. It’s a penetrant, which means it soaks into the asphalt shingle instead of sitting on top like a coating or filling a seam like a sealant.
The treatment is a plant-based oil, 100% active and not mixed with water. Bright Green Roof’s products page says it works to “replenish the bitumen within the asphalt shingle.” Bitumen is the asphalt that holds a shingle together. Years of sun bake the oils out of it, and the shingle goes stiff.
Three words that get mixed up
| Product type | Where it goes | Think of |
|---|---|---|
| Coating | Sits on top as a new layer | Paint on a fence |
| Sealant | Fills a gap or a seam | Caulk around a tub |
| Penetrant | Soaks into the material | Oil worked into a dry baseball glove |
Our treatment is the third kind. Not every roof product sold around Houston works that way. Some are coatings. Before you hire anyone, ask two things: is it a coating or a penetrant, and is it mixed with water? We lay the options out side by side on our page comparing roof treatments in the Houston area.
Why it matters for your roof
A coating gives your roof a new surface. A penetrant works on the shingle you already have. Here’s where you’d notice.
- The look. Nothing new sits on top, so you’re still looking at your own shingles. Bright Green Roof says the treatment brings back the shingle’s original color.
- The warranty. Bright Green Roof’s written warranty is about the shingle itself: 5 years, transferable, that it stays pliable and flexible.
- The leaks. It isn’t a sealant, so it won’t close a gap. A leak needs a roofer first.
It’s also USDA Certified Biobased. Here’s what that label means, and what it doesn’t. For the step-by-step, read how roof rejuvenation works. Then let Chris show you on your own roof at the free assessment. Text or call (281) 466-7436 to set a time.
